5 Things to Know about our Expeditionary Learning-inspired Approach

La Tierra Community School (LTCS) is the only Expeditionary Learning elementary school in the Prescott area, serving the Tri-Cities. While experiencing the joy of learning, our K-7 students demonstrate academic mastery, social engagement and the power of diversity.

At La Tierra Community School, we nurture the whole child and we aim to inspire a lifelong passion for learning in every one of our students. Our shared belief is that education is the means to empower future generations and one of the key elements for driving this nurturing, empowering and passion-building is our highly-qualified teaching staff, who are lifelong learners themselves. Another is our unique and rewarding Expeditionary Learning-inspired approach. Here are five things to know about our EL-inspired days together:

1) Learning is active

La Tierra students are scientists, urban planners, historians, and activists. We investigate real community problems and collaborate to develop creative, actionable solutions. Our students learn by conducting  “learning expeditions” rather than being taught one subject at a time.

2) Learning is challenging

LTCS students at all levels are supported to do more than they think they can. Excellence is  a driver for all — in the quality of their work and thinking.

3) Learning is meaningful

Our K-7 students apply their skills and knowledge to real-world issues, making positive change in their communities. We help young minds to see the relevance and purpose of their learning.

4) Learning is public

Through formal yet dynamic structures of presentation, exhibition, critique, and data analysis, students and teachers build a shared vision of pathways to exciting and academically-rewarding achievement.

5) Learning is collaborative

La Tierra school leaders, teachers, students, and families share rigorous expectations for quality work, achievement, and behavior. Trust, respect, responsibility, and joy in learning permeate our LTCS school culture.
