Profile: Barbara Braswell Loves the Aha! Moments of 4th Grade

Barbara Braswell, known to La Tierra students as Ms. Barbara, is our fabulous fourth grade teacher. She is in her 7th year of teaching at LTCS and has a passion for social justice. Her fourth grade’s class motto is “treat people the way you want to be treated” and the lessons continue from there!

Ms. Barbara graduated from Northern Arizona University with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and lives close to school with her partner Charles. She has four grown children and four grandchildren that are at the center of her life.

When did you know you wanted to work in education?

As a stay-at-home mom, I realized that kids fill my heart and soul. I knew that when I went
back into the workforce I wanted to work with children.

Who was your favorite teacher and why?

Mr. King!! He was an “amazing individual” (and would tell his students that we were that all the time). He literally changed my life. He encouraged me to join my high school student body leadership because he saw leadership qualities in me when I questioned my abilities. That experience led me on the path to becoming the person I am today and I am eternally grateful.

How does your school’s mission and vision align with your personal values?

I feel incredibly lucky to work at a school that completely aligns with my personal beliefs. The parts of our mission and vision that are most important to me are: educating the whole child, having respect for nature, valuing diversity, and responsibility for working towards social justice.

What do you love most about your role?

Fourth grade is the best! These children are sweet and caring and at an age that they have big questions. Aha moments are the best!

What else would you like us to know about YOU?

I enjoy traveling, hiking, playing tennis, and gardening.
